Description

Old Kampala Adult School (OKAS).

Education is the key to empowerment, and Old Kampala Adult School (OKAS) stands as a beacon of hope for adult learners and refugees seeking knowledge and skills in Uganda. Founded in 2009 by Lucky Henry, OKAS has grown from a small initiative to a well-respected institution dedicated to providing education to those who need it the most. With a mission to eliminate the inferiority complex and integrate refugees into Ugandan society through education, OKAS continues to transform lives by offering a second chance at learning.

History and Founding

The roots of OKAS can be traced back to 2009 when Lucky Henry, then a student at Kithende College, took it upon himself to help refugees struggling with communication barriers in Uganda. He started the school in Grace Estate Nursery School in Kakajjo 1 Zone, Kampala. Initially, the institution focused on teaching Oromo refugees from Oromia and Amharic-speaking refugees from Ethiopia. The vision quickly gained traction, and by the end of 2009, Congolese refugees had also joined.Despite the noble cause, financial challenges loomed large. The first batch of 30 students could not provide financial support, but their determination kept the vision alive. In 2010, with growing support and mobilization efforts, OKAS managed to sub-rent space at Great Care Nursery and Primary School, marking a significant step towards sustainability.

Growth and Expansion

The year 2010 saw a turning point when two Senegalese students, Hawa and Adam, contributed financially to the school’s operations. This financial boost enabled OKAS to relocate to Kampala Primary School, a move that facilitated further expansion. The school’s reputation spread, and by 2012, the influx of Somali refugees saw student enrollment rise to 150.With an increasing number of learners from diverse backgrounds, OKAS adapted its curriculum to cater to the linguistic and educational needs of its students. Today, the institution continues to serve refugees, adults, and other learners eager to acquire education in a supportive and inclusive environment.
