It all began in 1925 when the Comboni Sisters started a clinic under their veranda, providing basic medical services to the local community. Over the years, the hospital has grown in size and scope, expanding its services and upgrading its facilities to meet the ever-increasing demand for quality healthcare.

Today, St. Joseph’s Hospital Kitgum is a private not-for-profit public hospital that is part of the Network of Uganda Catholic Health facilities. It is located just 3 kilometers from the Kitgum town center and has a capacity of 280 beds. The hospital is managed by a Board of Governors led by the Archbishop of Gulu, while the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu provide a fundamental input in the management of the hospital.

One of the most interesting things about St. Joseph’s Hospital Kitgum is its rich history. During the Second World War, the hospital was temporarily closed, but it was reopened soon after. The Verona Fathers and Sisters consulted with the local community to provide the land for development, and the community willingly accepted and evacuated the place. In 1952, a block was constructed, and the dispensary was upgraded to a health center that provided maternity and outpatient services. Three years later, the Ministry of Health upgraded the health center into a hospital with 100 beds.

Over the years, the hospital has seen rapid infrastructure development, and it has had to expand its bed capacity to meet the demand for healthcare services during the peak of insurgency in Kitgum. However, with the return of peace, the bed capacity has been downsized to 280 beds.
