Moyo General Hospital, also known as Moyo Hospital, is a hospital located in the heart of Moyo Town, in Moyo District, Northern Uganda. The hospital was built during the late 1960s and commissioned by Idi Amin in 1972. Despite the hospital’s infrastructure being dilapidated, the hospital remains a critical healthcare provider in the region, providing healthcare services to the local population.
In 2013, the government of Uganda secured funding from the World Bank to repair and renovate certain hospitals, including Moyo General Hospital. Prism Construction Company Limited was awarded the contract to repair and renovate the hospital. Work started in February 2014, and the renovation includes a new emergency department (casualty department), a new, larger outpatient department, a new building to house the diesel-powered electricity generator, a new placenta disposal pit, a new medical waste disposal pit, a laundry facility for patients’ families, a kitchen and dining room for patients’ families, ventilated improved pit latrines for patient families and outpatients, and two new staff houses.
Although the renovation faced multiple delays, the hospital has remained operational throughout the construction period, and the renovation is expected to be completed in June 2016. The renovation will significantly improve the hospital’s infrastructure, equipment, and staffing, making it one of the best hospitals in the region.
Despite the hospital being severely under-staffed, employing only 60 nurses out of the 120 needed, the hospital remains a vital healthcare provider in the region. The hospital provides healthcare services to the local population, and the renovation will significantly improve the quality of healthcare provided. Moyo General Hospital is on the rise, and with the renovation, it will become a beacon of hope for the local population.
