Lira Hospital

Lira Hospital

Average Reviews

Lira Hospital is a regional referral hospital located in the bustling city of Lira in the Northern Region of Uganda. It serves as a vital healthcare facility for the districts of Amolatar, Apac, Dokolo, Lira, Kole, and Oyam. The hospital is funded by the Ugandan Ministry of Health and provides free general care services to the public.

One of the unique aspects of Lira Hospital is that it is designated as one of the internship hospitals in Uganda, where graduates of Ugandan medical schools can serve one year of internship under the supervision of qualified specialists and consultants. This not only provides valuable experience to the interns but also helps to address the issue of staff shortage that the hospital has been grappling with.

Despite the staff shortage, Lira Hospital has been providing quality healthcare to the people of Northern Uganda. The hospital has a bed capacity of 254 and offers a wide range of services including maternity care, surgery, radiology, pediatrics, and emergency care.

In September 2017, the hospital commissioned an 8-apartment building to house some of the critically essential staff, which has helped in improving response time to emergencies.

The hospital’s location is also ideal, as it is located along Police Road in the central business district of Lira City, making it easily accessible to residents of the city and surrounding areas. Lira Hospital is approximately 101 kilometers southeast of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and 339 kilometers north of Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda’s capital.

The construction of the three-story building took two years and eight months and cost USh1.5 billion (approx. US$430,000), fully funded by the Government of Uganda. This is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving healthcare in the region.
