Description

Kawempe General Hospital, also known as Kawempe Specialised National Referral Hospital, is a state-of-the-art medical facility in Uganda. The hospital was constructed by the Ugandan government between 2014 and 2016 at an estimated cost of US$11.3 million, with funding from the African Development Bank and the Nigeria Trust Fund.

Located in Kawempe Division, the hospital is approximately 5 kilometers north of Mulago National Referral Hospital along the Kampala-Gulu Highway. The hospital’s strategic location has made it a go-to medical center for the residents of Kampala, especially those living in Kawempe and surrounding areas.

Kawempe General Hospital was established to cater for the growing healthcare needs of the population in Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city. The city’s population has been increasing rapidly due to urbanization, and as a result, the pressure on Mulago National Referral Hospital has been immense.

The establishment of Kawempe General Hospital, along with the rehabilitation and improvement of Mulago Hospital, the construction of Kiruddu General Hospital, and the re-organization of healthcare delivery in the city of Kampala, aims to ease the burden on Mulago and ensure that it serves as a true referral hospital.

The hospital’s management is headed by Dr. Nehemiah Katusiime, who was appointed as the executive director in August 2018, and is deputized by Dr. Lawrence Kazibwe, both of whom are consultant obstetricians and gynecologists. With a team of experienced medical professionals and modern equipment, Kawempe General Hospital provides specialized medical services to the population of Kampala and beyond.
