A vibrant civil society is essential for economic development, poverty reduction, and the promotion of pluralism. The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) recognizes the importance of civil society in Uganda and partners with several organizations to build capacity, improve governance, and support the development of civil society.
AKF’s work in Uganda focuses on building strong and vibrant civil society organizations that harness their people’s strengths and enable them to guide their own community’s development. The Foundation works with universities and independent media outlets to build civil society, but its most significant contribution is through its own programs.
AKF’s programs in Uganda are aimed at improving the health, early childhood development, and education of children, as well as providing economic opportunities for vulnerable youth. By investing in people, economy, and civil society, AKF supports inclusion and growth in Uganda.
One of the key ways AKF supports civil society in Uganda is through its work with community-based organizations in the West Nile region. AKF partners with local civil society actors to build their capacity to respond to development challenges and to continue addressing the needs of Ugandans long after a project ends. AKF’s work in this region focuses on education, financial inclusion, and youth empowerment.
In education, AKF partners with local organizations to strengthen education systems, improve learning outcomes, and raise awareness of challenges facing girls’ education. AKF also works with Parent Teacher Associations and School Management committees to encourage school communities to develop gender-responsive school development plans, foster supportive learning environments, and share best practices for teaching and classroom management.
