Description

Located in the scenic hills of Kabale, Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the Franciscan Sisters from Breda in the Netherlands. Founded in 1963 as a dispensary, the hospital has grown to become a state-of-the-art facility that offers affordable, quality, and holistic healthcare services to the people of Rukungiri District and beyond.

The hospital owes its name to Karoli Lwanga, the Head of the 22 Catholic Uganda martyrs who were later canonized in 1964. His legacy of selfless service and sacrifice lives on in the hospital’s mission statement, “Heal the sick,” inspired by Matthew 10:8. The hospital’s vision is to provide healthcare services that are in imitation of Christ and his deeds.

With only 85 beds at its inception, the hospital conducted an impressive 350 deliveries in its first year of establishment. Today, the hospital boasts a vast complex and employs 170 people. It serves over 40,000 patients per year and is the referral hospital for Rukungiri District.

The hospital’s success is attributable to the numerous generous hands that have supported it over the years. The Franciscan Sisters of Breda, the hospital founders based in the Netherlands, have continued to support the hospital. They have facilitated numerous large projects with their invaluable support, which has been instrumental in the hospital’s development. The Friends of Nyakibale (FON), Netherlands, are also historical hospital benefactors whose generous hands have supported numerous infrastructural and staff developmental initiatives.

Global Emergency Care Collaborative (GECC), based in the USA, spearheaded the setting up and development of the hospital’s emergency department. African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) is the hospital’s highly valued American development partner that donated new operating theatres and assisted in equipping them. Mission Direct, based in the UK, has partnered with the hospital for a long time, especially in developing neonatal care facilities and services. Other partners include the Elizabeth Glazer Foundation (HIV/AIDS care) and ECM.

Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale is a haven of hope and healing, where the sick can come and receive the care they need. The hospital’s commitment to quality, affordability, and holistic healthcare services is unmatched, and its success is attributable to the numerous generous hands that have supported it.
